Grooming clipper blades come in various sizes and types, and choosing the right one depends on the dog’s coat type, breed standard, and desired finish. Here’s a general guideline for which blades to use for different breeds and coat types:
Understanding Clipper Blade Sizes
You will have noticed that your dog grooming clipper can accommodate different blade sizes. But which one is most suitable for your curly haired Poodle or for your short-haired cross-breed? And does one size fit all or is it better to switch blade sizes for different body parts? Let’s see….
- Lower numbers (e.g. #3, #4): These blades leave more hair on the dog (good for cold weather or for fluffy styles).
- Higher numbers (e.g. #10, #15, #30, #40): These can be used to trim closer to the skin.
- Finishing (F) blades: Provide a smoother, more even finish.

📌 Tips
- Always go with the grain of the coat unless you want a shorter cut.
- Test blade heat regularly—some blades heat up quickly and may burn the dog.
- Comb attachments are great for leaving longer lengths while still using a safe base blade (usually #10 or #30).
